The settlement obtained by Representative Ransom was not only rational; it was excellent under the circumstances. The chance of obtaining any remedy from an arbitrator was remote in light Martin’s clear violation of the company’s rules. It was entirely responsible for the union to decide it would not risk Martin’s reinstatement in order to pursue arbitration of the kinds of arguments he has raised.
